  7.     Not every college orientation week includes a jolting
  8. theatrical experience. But this summer CORNELL UNIVERSITY has
  9. sent letters to its 3,000 incoming freshmen urging them to
  10. attend campus performances of David Feldshuh's prizewinning 1989
  11. drama Miss Evers' Boys. The play is a searing account of the
  12. U.S. government's lethally misguided effort to study the
  13. degenerative effects of syphilis on a group of rural black men
  14. in Alabama. Opening the school year with the play "is an
  15. institutional statement that we would like all of the diverse
  16. people on our campus to understand," says Cornell law professor
  17. Larry Palmer.
